Monday, July 20

Nuclear Power Plant Tours
8 a.m.–4:30 pp.m.
Buses will depart at 8 a.m. Lunch will be provided.

North Anna Power StationMineral, Va.

North Anna generates 1,786 megawatts from its two units—enough electricity to power 450,000 homes. Unit 1 began commercial operation in June 1978, and Unit 2 followed in December 1980.

Peach Bottom Atomic Power StationYork County, Pa.

Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station, located on the west bank of the Conowingo Pond (Susquehanna River), is a three-unit nuclear generating facility. Unit 1 was a 40-megawatt experimental high-temperature, helium-cooled and graphite-moderated reactor. During its seven-year life (1967-1974), Unit 1 provided valuable technical and cost data to U.S. utilities for application to larger plants.

Units 2 and 3 are boiling water reactors capable of generating 1,140 megawatts each. Both units began commercial operation in 1974.

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Operations Center* 8 –11:30 a.m.and 1–4:30 p.m.

Attendees are invited to experience the inner workings of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission Operations Center, which serves as a focal coordination point for communicating with the NRC licensees, state entities and other federal agencies on operating events in both the nuclear reactor and materials industries. The tour will address the roles and responsibilities of the various teams that comprise the NRC response organization when it is staffed during an emergency involving an NRC-licensed facility. It will also address the resources that the NRC utilizes when communicating information to external stakeholders and receiving information from the licensees during an emergency.

Friday, July 24

8 a.m.–4:30 pp.m.Buses will depart at 8 a.m. Lunch will be provided.

Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power PlantLusby, Md.

Calvert Cliffs is a two-unit pressurized water reactor located on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay in southern Maryland. Calvert Cliffs 1 (873 megawatts) began generating electricity in 1975 and Unit 2 (864 megawatts) joined the system in 1977.

In March 2000, Calvert Cliffs opened a new chapter in nuclear power history by becoming the first plant in the United States to earn 20-year extensions of its operating licenses from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Three Mile Island Generating Station
Londonderry Township, Pa.

The station is built on an island in the Susquehanna River. Three Mile Island 1 began commercial operations on Sept. 2, 1974. The initial construction cost for the plant was about $400 million. FirstEnergy Corp. owns Three Mile Island 2, the reactor damaged during an accident in 1979.

Three Mile Island 1 is a pressurized water reactor designed by Babcock and Wilcox. The plant is capable of generating 850 net megawatts—enough power to support the electricity needs of over 300,000 average American homes.

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Operations Center 8 –11:30 a.m.and 1–4:30 p.m.

Attendees are invited to experience the inner workings of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission Operations Center, which serves as a focal coordination point for communicating with the NRC licensees, state entities and other federal agencies on operating events in both the nuclear reactor and materials industries.
